Chef Lucia Watson is the owner and operator of one of the Twin Cities favorite neighborhood cafes. The feel is intimate and the menu changes weekly as they work closely with local farmers, offering the best of each season. Try their mixed greens with pear, hickory nuts, and home made vinaigrette. All their salads are excellent and super fresh. My favorite stop by item to purchase is their millet flax seed bread. It doesn’t have sugar in it like so much of the bread nowadays and is crunchy with millet and flax, chewy, and hearty. Half of the restaurant is sit down for dinners and wine and the other part lets you order at the counter and bring your food to the table. They have been around for 25 years and a must stop in uptown.

You’ll feel like you are in Europe when you step inside Salut. The French feeling decor puts you in a festive mood. The food is spectacular and unique. Try their warm olives or a shooter of nutella banan chocolate milk. I hear the Quiche lorraine is to die for. Hustle and bustle is a common theme here but they seem to handle the crowds with ease and attentive doting.

Cafe Latte will give you a warm fuzzy feeling the minute you step inside. The place buzzes with activity during most hours and features three restaurants in one. It is gourmet cafeteria serving home made soups, crunchy salads, and design your own sandwiches. It is also a retail bakery and serves the deserts at the restaurant. If you want to cause yourself a serious addiction, try their tres leches cake. It is moist like pudding with layers of whipped cream slathered between the yellow, melt in your mouth, not too sweet cake. Cafe Latte is also a pizza wine bar for the later crowd.

Blackbird is a casual restaurant, serving lunch and dinner, plus breakfast on the weekends. All of the dishes are prepared from scratch in their tiny kitchen. No frozen fries, no pre-fab desserts.

The Blackbird chefs use high quality ingredients and transform them into their versions of homespun classics. The menu changes monthly to showcase the best ingredients in their seasons, and to accommodate the fickleness of Mother Nature. But, they also have offer some of the old standby favorites.

Handcrafted draft beers and food friendly wines are sensibly priced and their coffee, home brewed and strong.
The Blackbird reopened fairly recently and moved to a new location after the fire burned down Patina and the other businesses on the corner of Bryant and 50th. It’s good to have them back!

Fuji Ya is located in the heart of Uptown at Lake and Lyndale. It offers a full sushi bar, extensive sake menu, private zashiki rooms and over 50 years of authentic Japanese food experience. My favorite is the crunchy roll, tempura shrimp inside a roll of rice and crispy and spicy on the outside. You can get service at the tables or go to the sushi bar or the drink bar. This is a popular place, always buzzing with activity and the food is very fresh. The menu has other items if you are not into sushi. The teriyaki chicken is stellar.
